Pride & Prejudice, 2005
My daughters and I absolutely LOVE Pride & Prejudice! All versions of Pride & Prejudice! The 1995 A&E Version that takes 8 hours to watch! The 2005 version starring Keira Knightley. Even Pride, Prejudice, & Zombies! My daughters have the Pride & Prejudice books memorized, and could quote the characters in both of the main Pride & Prejudice movies by heart. My older daughter, Rebecca, is very much like Jane. And my younger daughter, Lizzie, is just exactly like Lizzy! I will definitely not claim to be like Mrs. Bennett, although at times I may remind my daughters of her, just a tiny bit... For my girls, this is the ultimate love story. The three of us would be content to watch it at least monthly, if we had time.
So when I had the opportunity to visit some of the sites from Pride & Prejudice while I was in England, I jumped at the chance! In November of 2024 we visited England and went on a circular road trip through the country. We visited so many different sites throughout England, but both of the Pemberley's were definitely a highlight of the trip! We also visited Rosings Park from the 2005 Pride & Prejudice -- it is called Burghley House and is located in Samford, England.
Pemberley for the 2005 film, the one starring Keira Knightley, is Chatsworth House. Chatsworth House has been passed down for 17 generations of the Devonshire family. It is cared for by Chatsworth House Trust and you can tour 25 rooms, including the Sculpture Gallery that you see Lizzy walk through during the movie. The house, garden, and farmyard open at 10:30 a.m. Parking opens at 9 a.m. The house closes at 4:30 p.m. Visiting the house and garden costs 32 euro.
When I was planning our trip, I looked on the website for Chatsworth House and it said that purchasing tickets ahead of time was not necessary. What I didn't plan on was that the Chatsworth Christmas Market would be starting the day we arrived. Tickets were sold out for the day! It is the BIGGEST regret of my England trip that I didn't purchase my Chatsworth House tickets ahead of time. We were able to walk through the Christmas Market and walk around outside the house, but I did not get to go inside. I was so heartbroken! Now I need to go back to England! The official website for Chatsworth House is here:

When Lizzy visits Pemberley, aka Chatsworth House, she begins to see Mr. Darcy differently than she had before, and she begins to fall in love with him. Unbeknownst to her, Mr. Darcy arrives home and catches her in his house. This is an integral part of their love story. Here is a clip from the movie of Lizzy inside Chatsworth House:

Chatsworth House was built in 1560 by the Countess of Shrewsberry, Elizabeth Hardwick. It houses priceless collections of art, some of which you can see when you visit. Walking around the grounds, over the bridge, admiring the house, it was easy to imagine that Lizzy and Mr. Darcy were there as well. Visiting Pemberley was a necessary stop on our trip! Completed in 1587, Burghley House is a grand and beautiful estate built by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I. You can tour the house for only 20 euro with an advanced-purchase ticket from their website: Burghley House
You can tour the home at night (from 6-8 pm) with a ticket to "Burghley by Twilight" for 30 euro. The home is open from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. every day except Friday, from March 15th through November 2nd. They have a Halloween Trail in the fall, and Christmas concerts at evenings in Christmastime. They even host a Santa Fun Run every year! They also host a Christmas Fair every year at the end of November, which is what they were setting up for when we arrived at Burghley House in November of 2024. The house was not open to visitors at the time, but we were able to park and walk around the grounds behind the gates, admiring the views of the house.
While we were there, Lady Catherine de Bourgh wasn't anywhere in sight, thank goodness! She would have been quite put out that we were snooping about her vast grounds! The home is also featured in the DaVinci Code as a stand-in for the French Chateau de Villette, and was used in interior scenes as well to stand in for the pope's summer home (Castel Gandolfo) and Sophie's grandfather's home. It has also been featured in "The Crown" and many other movies or television series. I would love to tour the inside of it someday!
The address is Burghley House, Peterborough, Stamford PE9 3JY, United Kingdom
Another location that you can visit while you're in England, that is iconic from the movie, is the Temple of Apollo. It is located here:

Mr Darcy proposes to Elizabeth During our England trip in November 2024, the Temple of Apollo closed before we could make it there, but my daughter Rebecca visited England in April 2025 and was able to visit Stourhead. Their official website is here:

We parked in the Nether End Car Park in Baslow and walked onto the Chatsworth grounds. |

It was a beautiful walk, but very cold, and took us about an hour to reach the house |

I am sure the view of Chatsworth House would be quite different without the Christmas Market |

We did go inside the house to attempt to purchase tickets, but no luck. We had to stay outside. We did enjoy the Christmas Market, though. We had some great macaroni and cheese and I bought some nice jewelry. |
